In what Telstra says is a national first, the telco today beamed a mobile three dimensional image of its chief technology officer, Hugh Bradlow, from Melbourne to Adelaide to give a live business presentation. Read more
Apple says ‘drop in soon’ to Sydney store

The countdown to the opening of the first Apple Store in the southern hemisphere has begun with the unveiling of a “coming soon” sign across the facade of a nearly-completed office complex in the heart of the Sydney CBD.
The sign is printed onto a sheet of blue material that is stretched across the glass atrium on the front of the building at the corner of George and King streets. Read more
Local Vodafone customer base hits 4m

MOBILE phone operator Vodafone Australia says it is well placed and prepared for its 2008 fiscal year after bolstering its customer base by 9.6 per cent. Vodafone’s customer base increased to more than four million in the 12 months ended March 31, up from 3.675 million in the previous corresponding period. Read more

OWNERS of Apple devices such as iPods and iPhones may soon be able to charge them up by leaving them out in the sun. Apple has filed a patent for a technology which would enable a layer of solar cells to be inserted under a touch-sensitive screen of the sort used in the iPhone. Read more
Broadband Delay Seen as a Levelling Bid Process

A MAJOR beneficiary of the Federal Government’s decision to extend its broadband tender bid deadline believes the delay will not prevent a winner being selected by the end of the year.
The Government has seemingly acknowledged the weeks of persistent criticism from one likely bidder, Terria, formerly known as G9, about the brevity of the tender period by yesterday scrapping the July 25 deadline for bids for the subsidised national broadband network. Read more

Coders Tell Why They’re Avoiding Vista

Windows developers are confirming the results of a survey released yesterday that found fewer than 1 in 12 programmers currently writing applications targeting Windows Vista.
“None of our customers are saying, ‘G******it, we need those WPF controls now!’” said Julian Bucknall, CTO for Windows programming tools maker Developer Express Inc. , referring to one of Vista’s most highly-touted features, its new graphical subsystem, Windows Presentation Foundation . Rather, “we find most are still sticking with ASP.Net and Windows Forms applications.” Read more
