Apple Will Launch ‘iPhone nano’ For Christmas

August 5, 2008

apple logoThese rumours first popped over over one year ago but now they’re back with a vengeance…

According to the Daily Mail (I know, I know, I know…) the long talked about ‘nano’ version of the iPhone will be launching this year in time for Christmas. Available on either monthly or PAYG contracts (the latter will apparently result in a £150 RRP) the paper’s source explains:

Apple Computers“This will be the big one. The iPhone 3G has been the fastest-selling phone ever in the UK, but it is too expensive to be a realistic proposition in the pay-as-you-go market. However, a cut down version, with the candy bar shape of iPod nano music players, would be a huge hit as a Christmas gift.”

Of course a design patent for such a device did hit the FFC last year (snap above) showing a device with a physical Click Wheel on the back and seemingly context sensitive touchscreen keypads and keyboards (which begs the question: why do you need a physical Click Wheel?).

Still, I severely doubt what we’re seeing above is a final device and much as I question the Daily Mail’s ability to be right about, well… anything I do hope this is true. Besides, Apple hardly follows the Asus Eee PC system of product convolution so I suspect to it could handle a whole two iPhone models.

Naturally questions about 3G, WiFi, web browsing, multi-touch, the camera and so on and so forth are all raised by this, but a big one in my mind is more straightforward: would such a handset still be locked to O2 or even locked at all?
