Apple MacBook Review
July 9, 2008
The Apple MacBook 13-inch has captured the hearts of several generations of users frustrated with the complexities of Windows. It’s a campus favorite and a hit among teens and novice users. Now, the MacBook 13-inch has made the transition to Intel’s latest “Penryn” processor core, which has boosted speeds and battery life across every laptop we’ve seen it on. Thanks to this upgrade, Apple ’s impeccable customer support network, and the MacBook’s overall sex appeal, we expect sales of the new incarnation—the Apple MacBook 13-inch (Penryn), priced at $1,299 direct—to thrive for now. But other laptops are offering more features and cool designs for less money. Apple needs to work on a makeover, as well as improving the feature set and price, in order to keep the 13-inch MacBooks flying off the shelves.
Dell XPS M1730 (Penryn) Review
July 9, 2008
The newest Dell XPS M1730 (Penryn) ($4,184 direct) is an awe-inspiring piece of technological splendor. A bold statement, yes, but one that’s easily warranted by this masterfully designed gaming laptop, despite its size and heft. Weight is, in fact, this rig’s only limitation, considering that gems like the Alienware Area-51 m15x are obliterating gaming benchmarks with lighter frames. The overall design of the Dell XPS M1730, which I reviewed last September, has not been touched, but now the laptop comes equipped with a Penryn-based Intel Extreme processor and a top-of-the-line SLI nVidia 8800M GTX configuration.
Dell Studio 15 Review
July 9, 2008
When Dell crossed the bargain pricing of its Inspiron laptops with the design sense of its XPS line, something sensational emerged—a new mainstream laptop line called Dell Studio. With the new line, Dell hopes to reel in the latest generation of back-to-schoolers, content creators, social-network addicts, and camera enthusiasts, just to name a few groups.
HP Pavilion dv2800t Review
July 9, 2008
For those with an appreciation for fine art and technology, the HP Pavilion dv2800t Artist Edition ($1,049 direct) offers the best of both worlds in the form of an affordable 14-inch laptop. The laptop’s skin, designed by Portuguese artist Joao Oliveira, was picked from more than 8,000 submissions in a worldwide competition cosponsored by HP. The dv2800t is a head-turner, and an inexpensive one at that. What’s even better is its underlying feature set and Intel parts, which will help aspiring graphic artists, illustrators, and soon-to-be graduates become success stories. For all this, it earns an Editors’ Choice in the budget category.

June 15, 2008
It seems entirely appropriate that there’s a comprehensive guide to the Lenovo range of ThinkPad laptops on Wikipedia, because the list is simply enormous and we mere mortals need all the help we can get to navigate ourselves to laptop bliss.
IBM built up the ThinkPad brand by offering businesses a huge range of choice so they could have the exact list of features that they wanted and Lenovo, the new owner of ThinkPad, has very sensibly followed this business model. The result is that you can choose from the R, T, X and Z families of Core 2 Duo laptop as well as this variant, which is a convertible Tablet based on the X61. Read more
