Acer’s Chromebook Laptop Remains among Amazon Bestsellers

Taipei, July 20 (CNA) Acer Inc.’s Chromebook, an always-connected laptop running Google Inc.’s Chrome operating system, remains competitive on Amazon.com Inc.’s bestsellers list for laptop computers six weeks after going on sale in June.

As of Wednesday morning, the 11.6-inch Acer Chromebook with Wi-Fi connectivity was ranked seventh on the list, extending its stay in the top 100 to 42 days.

The 12.1-inch Samsung Series 5 Wi-Fi Chromebook was ranked 15th and Samsung’s 3G Chromebook was 12th.

Samsung Cleared of Shipping Laptops with Secret Spyware

p5Samsung has denied allegations it installed secret spyware software on its laptops that monitors and records users’ activity – including their keystrokes – without their consent.

Further, the security firm whose antivirus software was used to detect what it thought was spyware has published a statement on its blog apologising to Samsung.

New Lenovo ThinkPad T Series Laptops; T420 and T520

tech 3Lenovo has opened up availability for some brand new ThinkPad professional laptop computers. The new models made available number two in total and each is a member of the relatively new T Series family of ThinkPad notebooks.

The names for the new models are T420 (14″) and T520 (15.6″). Each of the those two share more than just the family prefix (T) in common, they both also share access to the brand new second generation Intel Sandy Bridge processors.

Sony to strike with ‘Thunderbolt’ laptop

tech 2Sony is readying a “hybrid” Vaio laptop equipped with Intel’s Thunderbolt tech, according to a report.

Thunderbolt, formerly known by its codename Light Peak, is a new connection technology that combines high-speed data transfer and high-definition video on a single cable. The Intel-developed technology has come to market through a technical collaboration with Apple and is being made available first on Apple’s new line of MacBook Pro laptop computers.

Though Sony did not publicly endorse Thunderbolt at the Intel roll-out last month, the company has previously offered public support for the technology. “Sony is excited about the potential for Light Peak technology that Intel has been developing, and believes it could enable a new generation of high-speed device connectivity,” Ryosuke Akahane, vice president of the Vaio Business Group at Sony, said in a statement that was posted last year on Intel’s Web site.

Could Eye-Controlled Laptops Be the Next Big Thing?

1Every so often, a futuristic idea emerges in computing and either takes the world by storm or vanishes amid general derision. The latest idea is a laptop controlled by the eyes instead of a mouse.

Tobii, a Swedish company which already makes eye-controlled personal computers for paralysed people and research laboratories, unveiled a prototype at the recent CeBIT trade fair in Hanover, Germany, for a mass-market device.

Eye control could become as ubiquitous as the touch screen, or be rejected by the bulk of computer users as too geeky — as was the fate of videophones, which many people find too invasive for everyday use.

Tobii’s device, a sleek black Lenovo laptop, has a keyboard and users must also use their hands to operate it.

Laptops to help learn English

2DUBAI — Educational experts in the UAE discussed ways to improve English language training (ELT) using laptops, at a forum hosted by the British University in Dubai (BUiD), in partnership with Sharjah Higher Colleges of Technology (SHC).

The ‘Laptops in ELT’ Forum explored best practices in using laptop computers in English language classrooms, while creating awareness of software and tools available to enhance language learning. “The forum provided an opportunity for those involved or interested in laptop education to get together, review existing software and discuss various perspectives. The subsequent discussion allowed participants to voice their concerns, and the debate was informative and refreshing,” said Dr Amanda Howard, lecturer and English Language Teaching Coordinator at the British University in Dubai. Universities using the technology have reported improvements in language retention and better success rates among students learning English.
